A hammertoe is characterized by a bending of one or both joints of any toe. This is a very common podiatric issue. The  condition causes difficulties wearing shoes which can often exacerbate the problem. If you suffer from hammertoes, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:

Corns occur between, top or side of the toes. Corns are a buildup of dead  skin  caused  by abnormal friction at the contact point between the toe and shoe.

Calluses, also thick dead skin builds up on the bottom of the foot due to excessive pressure caused by an imbalance of the bones in the foot.  Pain occurs from the irritated bone or joint and not from the corns or calluses..

Hammertoes and their symptoms generally worsen over time, as the friction between the foot and footwear becomes more severe. If left untreated, hammertoes can cause rigid joints/toes allowing open sores to develop. If you are suffering from this condition, it's important to seek help sooner rather than later as hammertoes won't heal without treatment. Treatment options include changing footwear, trimming or padding the corns or calluses, or custom orthotics. Surgery is recommended in some cases. Contact us today to discuss your hammertoe problem and we will begin finding a viable treatment option.
